Dr. Michelle Bryan named Chair of Counselor Education, Leadership & Research

AUGUSTA, GA – Dr. Michelle Bryan, Associate Professor of Educational Studies at the University of South Carolina, has been named Chair of Counselor Education, Leadership & Research in the College of Education at Georgia Regents University.

An educator with more than 16 years of classroom and administrative experience, Bryan has also held teaching and leadership positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; University of South Carolina, Columbia; and within k-12 education.

Bryan comes to GRU full of ideas on how to encourage faculty and student success as the university grows into its research mission. With the groundwork already laid by ongoing faculty scholarship, she said she sees the transition as more of an enhancement, rather than a rebuilding: “Encouraging them to begin thinking about turning presentations into publications and stretching from a research project to a research agenda.” To facilitate that work, she foresees: “Lots of face to face meetings with faculty, lots of meetings with programs to listen and learn, and lots of engagement around research – brown bags, celebratory lunches when people have things that they will accomplish, and just making sure the faculty know they’re appreciated,” she said.

And, of course, a key role of research is to inform practitioners and to inspire change. So Bryan hopes that publicizing and promoting faculty and student research will contribute to growth.

“There’s no point in doing research if you’re going to keep it to yourself, but education scholars are often the least likely people to tell you what they’re doing. We’re teachers at heart. We’re really about celebrating other people’ accomplishments. Never ourselves. We’re rarely in the spotlight,” she said. “But you can’t contribute to the conversation if you’re not in it. And we’re going to be in it because our faculty are engaged in important work – work that can have a significant impact on educational policies, practices, and procedures.  I’m confident that we can and will have a seat at the ‘research’ table.  It’s already happening.”

Bryan is the author of nearly 100 scholarly articles, book chapters, conference presentations, technical papers and more, and is under contract for the book, “Making a qualitative difference: Social justice and the doctoral process.”

She is the 2009 recipient of the Early Career Award for Teaching from the University of South Carolina; and the 2003-2004 Minority Presence Fellowship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She a member of the Frank Porter Graham Honor Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.

Bryan received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
