College will host seventh RTI workshop in series

AUGUSTA, GA. – The Augusta University College of Education will host an educators’ workshop, “RTI and STEM Approaches: The Perfect Match,” on Dec. 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the JSAC Ballroom on the Summerville campus.

Dr. Ashley Gess and Dr. Nai-Cheng Kuo will present “RTI and STEM Approaches: The Perfect Match.” It’s a subject about which Gess is passionate, she said, because individualization and differentiation are maximized in an integrative STEM/STEAM class.

“This gives students more than just knowledge-level take-aways. When implemented correctly, this approach brings together students in a culture of inquiry and authentically includes all. And an integrative STEM/STEAM classroom can reduce the need for the number of Tier 1 interventions,” Gess said.

Gess will cover what STEAM lessons look like in classrooms at all levels of k12 education, and Kuo will present how tiered-support intervention can be incorporated to increase students’ access to STEAM lessons.

“This approach prepares students to achieve the Georgia Standards of Excellence and to develop real-life problem-solving skills,” Kuo said.

Dr. Shelly Allen, Director of Curriculum for Richmond County Schools, and Scott Weinand, Director of Elementary School Director of Student Learning for Columbia County Schools, will present their implementation of Integrative STEM/STEAM. Participants will learn examples about STEAM lessons and use tiered-support intervention to reach all students in STEAM lessons.

“Augusta University is ready to support teachers who would like to ramp up their practice and include integrative STEAM approaches,” Gess said.

The RTI workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is limited to available space. Click here to register: http://tinyurl.com/7thRTIAU.
