University hosts growing Jr Model UN conference for third year

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Local middle school students will take on issues of international politics and human rights issues when they attend the third annual middle school Model United Nations Conference on Wednesday, March 15, at Augusta University.

Students step into shoes of UN Ambassadors and debate a range of issues that the UN works to resolve. Each team takes on the role of a member state and represents that state’s issues at a mock global conference. Click here to view photos from the 2016 Spring conference.

The College of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, wrote the first ever full edition of the middle school Junior Model United Nations curriculum.

“The curriculum integrates history, political science, communications, ethics and diplomacy – and even the sciences to address things like environmental challenges and resource allotment,” said Dr. Juan Walker, professor of education. Topics this year will include ending child marriages and preventing child mortality through immunization.

Edited by Walker, Dr. Stacie Pettit and Dr. Laura Rychly, professors of education, and by Dr. Craig Albert, professor of political science, this curriculum was drafted by graduate students in order to help middle school teachers prepare for Augusta University’s Junior Model United Nations conference.

“Being given a voice at this age in global matters gives them a better understanding of the challenges they will face in the future. It prepares them to examine and to participate in the world around them. And it can give them a new perspective on their everyday lives,” Walker said.

The conference will take place on March 15, 2017, from 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Jaguar Student Activities Center at the Summerville Campus.
