National experts to speak about autism, ADHD

AUGUSTA, GA – In May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 1 in 68 children is born with an autism spectrum disorder – a rate 30 percent higher than previously thought. In response to this growing need, the GRU College of Education’s Literacy Center and the CSRA Reading Council will co-host two nationally renowned speakers at the September Literacy Summit on Sept. 12-13.

“The numbers are just staggering. And there are so many unanswered questions,” said Dr. Paulette Harris, Professor of Education. Harris is both the Director of the GRU Literacy Center and the President-Elect of the CSRA Reading Council.

Friday’s keynote speaker, Kerrie Powell, is a nationally known advocate for those with autism disorders. And Saturday’s keynote speaker, Dr. Joel Sussman, is a physician who built his practice around ADHD. Powell talks about her journey with her own autistic son, and Sussman, who has ADHD himself, went back to school after completing his medical degree and earned a masters in learning disabilities to better understand the needs of patients struggling with ADD and ADHD.

The summit will also feature presentations on the National Reading Styles Institute, to combat dyslexia and related disorders, along with sessions on Love & Logic, Phonics Alive and Color Me Organized. A panel discussion will feature experts from local school systems to talk about how they’re responding to the needs of students with learning differentiations.

Registration is $10 before Sept. 8, and $20 after Sept. 8. It includes membership in the CSRA Reading Council. GRU students may apply for scholarships to attend.
